AI in HR: Where to Actually Start

A practical map of the four places AI pays off in people processes — and the two where it's a trap.

Most HR teams hear 'AI' and think recruiting screening. That's usually the wrong place to start.

The highest-leverage AI wins inside the people function tend to sit in three boring places: meeting summarization for HRBPs, policy Q&A bots fed by your handbook, and structured-interview note synthesis. None of these touch a hiring decision directly. All of them save your team hours per week.

The two places to avoid for now: automated candidate scoring (regulatory risk, bias amplification) and AI-written performance reviews (erodes manager skill, lands badly with employees).

Start with the boring wins. Build trust. Then revisit the hard cases with guardrails in place.
